In 1999 a Japanese music video game series begun: Gitadora. The first entry was Guitar Freaks! This being a Playstation port of the 1998 arcade classic of the same name. Guitar Freaks was the first rythm video game ever developed with a guitar shaped controller (I have no evidence for this,) and was very popular overseas!
Sometime between the launch of Guitar Freaks and 2005, the video game accessory company Red Octane saw the potential in the rythm game genre and soon begun working on their own game with the company Harmonix Music Systems. On November 8th 2005 in North America, the very first Guitar Hero released for the Playstation 2.
